I am a chai tea addict. Honestly, I don’t drink coffee anywhere near as often as I used to. I start my day, and often end it, with a Homemade Chai Tea Latte.

I recently remade a recipe for Pumpkin Chai Coffee Cake. My original recipe used a dry chai tea mix and a chai tea concentrate. I wanted to make it more accessible to those who maybe don’t want to go out and buy a couple of different types of chai tea mix for a single recipe, and that led to the creation of this Chai Spice Mix.

Get ready for all the chai recipes, because these spices are delicious and will let you love your chai in all kinds of new ways!

Why This Recipe Works

It’s an easy to blend combination of spices that you may already have in your own pantry.

Pre-made chai spice mix is harder to find in stores and tends to be a bit expensive. This recipe is much more cost effective, especially if you keep the spices needed on hand anyway. You can easily mix as much or as little as you need.

You can use this spice mix in all kinds of recipes for beverages, breakfast, and desserts. It’s also a unique gift to give to your loved ones who love baking or chai tea.

How To Use Chai Spice

Now that you’ve got a batch of this homemade chai spice, the question becomes, how do you use it?

The most popular way to use chai spice mix is to add it to tea to make your own homemade chai tea. Usually you would steep whole spices in hot tea, but you can use this spice mixture. To do this, simply stir 1/2 teaspoon of the mix into 8 ounces of hot, brewed black tea. You can use coffee instead if you prefer.

Please note that this is a spice mixture, not an instant drink mix. The spices will not dissolve, but will flavor the tea. You can strain the tea through cheesecloth or use an extra fine mesh tea diffuser to limit the amount of loose spices in your tea, or simply let them sink to the bottom and avoid drinking the last little bit.

You can add an equal amount of chai spice mix to your favorite recipes that call for pumpkin spice or a combination of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It will change the warmth and spiciness of the recipe, but not in a drastically different way.

You can also try mixing a small amount into vanilla cake batter or vanilla frosting to make chai cake and chai frosting.

Or, simply stir a small amount, to taste, into oatmeal or vanilla yogurt.

Some recipes that you can try this with are:

  • Pumpkin Spice Pancakes to make pumpkin chai pancakes, or simple add a small amount to your favorite plain pancake batter to make chai pancakes.
  • Mini Vanilla Cupcakes to make chai cupcakes.
  • Mini Chocolate Cupcakes to make chocolate chai cupcakes.

Tips and Techniques

  • Be sure that your spices are fresh and not out of date for the best flavor.
  • You can adjust the spice to suite your own taste.
  • This is a small batch recipe. Simply increase the serving size in the recipe card to increase the volume, if needed.
  • Store extra spice mix in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for up to as long as the earliest expiration date on the spices that you use.

I often sprinkle nutmeg on my tea but this is much better. I’ll be making a pot of this so it’s ready to use all the time.
