Rutabaga is quickly becoming my favorite alternative to potatoes. This is saying a lot because I absolutely love cauliflower.

Mashed Rutabaga is much more like mashed potatoes in taste and texture than mashed cauliflower, in my opinion. I also really enjoy Roasted Rutabaga.

I decided the next way to try rutabaga would be to use it to make keto french fries. To make them a bit more flavorful, I add a little seasoning.

These are now my go-to keto french fry alternative.

Why This Recipe Works

This is a really easy recipe to make and can be served as is alongside any main dish that you’d normally serve french fries with. Or, load them up with cheese, bacon, sour cream, and scallions and enjoy them as an appetizer.

They are a low carb alternative to traditional french fries that is perfectly suitable for those following a keto diet, as well. This recipe is also naturally gluten free.

Some dipping sauces that go great with rutabaga fries are:

  • sugar free ketchup
  • sugar free barbecue sauce

Tips and Techniques

  • Buy rutabagas when ripe. They will usually have a slight purple coloring to them. Avoid rutabagas with any green shoots coming out of the top as these are likely over-ripe.
  • Store leftover cooked Rutabaga Fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 4-5 days.

FAQ’s

How Many Carbs Are In Rutabaga Fries?

Rutabaga Fries have approximately 9 total carbohydrates in a serving, with a total of 7 net carbs per serving. The seasoning on these fries increases the carb count very minimally.

What Do Rutabaga Fries Taste Like?

Rutabagas are often described as having a taste similar to a cross between a potato and a carrot. They are also similar to turnips, but sweeter.

By adding seasoning to these fries, you do mask some of the taste of the rutabaga, but not entirely.

How Do You Cook Rutabaga Fries?

The recipe card below gives you instructions on how to bake rutabaga fries.

You can also deep fry rutabaga fries. Simply preheat the oil in your deep fryer to 350°F. Place the Rutabaga Fries in the basket of the deep fryer and lower into the preheated oil.

Cook for 5-6 minutes or until, lightly browned, crispy, and fork-tender. Drain on a paper towel.

Finally, you can air fry rutabaga fries.

Preheat your air fryer to 400°F. Add the rutabaga fries to the air fryer basket and set the timer to air fry for 15 minutes, shaking the basket 2-3 times during air frying until lightly browned and fork-tender.

Great recipe but I recommend adding the seasoning blend just a few minutes before they’re cooked as the first time I tried these the garlic granules and seasoning mix burnt leaving a black crisp outside. The next time I added it a few minutes before the end and the result was perfect

I’ve tried rutabaga for the first time in an air fryer. It was awesome!! Olive oiled and seasoned. Looks like potatoes but isn’t. Tastes pretty good. Am going to make some for the next BBQ to see if noticed.

I’ve been doing turnip fries for the past few weeks, but they just couldn’t replace the texture of true potato fries. I decided to try these and OMG! The texture is so close to real potato fries, and while I could taste a slight sweetness compared to potato fries, it reminded me a little of sweet potato fries and was not troubling to me at all. I am excited now to try rutabagas for a potato replacement in many of my recipes, including breakfast potatoes, mashed potatoes, scalloped potatoes, etc. If you have not tried rutabagas yet for a potato replacement, give them a try!

Really great recipe. Loved the seasoning. They seem to start getting soft when cooled, so I will make them last next time. I heard I could soak them in a little salt water before hand and it would remove a small amount of starch. Not sure, but I was able to freeze what I couldn’t eat before cooking. Only one person can’t eat a large rutabaga! But, I’m ready for the next rounds! Thanks for the recipe!

This is a really nice alternative to potato-based fries. I’ve been having a lot more vegetable alternatives pasta … this is another great low-carb option.

I didn’t realise rutabaga was low carb! I’ve only ever had it in boiled form, which I like well enough. This sounds absolutely delicious and much better!
