You often hear, homemade is best, and that is definitely true when it comes to Tzatziki Sauce. You can make it exactly how you like it without unnecessary or unwanted ingredients.

Tzatziki is a staple in Greek cuisine. It’s often served with appetizers, main dishes and salads because it pairs so well with common Greek ingredients.

You will love it with meze platters, gyros, appetizers like Kolokithokeftedes (Greek Zucchini Fritters) and main dishes Chicken Kofta.

Why This Recipe Works

Homemade tzatziki is easy to make and only takes around 10 minutes to prepare.

It’s better than store-bought sauce because it’s made with fresh ingredients and you can avoid certain ingredients, like carrageenan, by choosing) a Greek yogurt, like Chobani brand. Many pre-packaged tzatziki sauces do have carrageenan or preservatives.

The recipe amounts and ingredients are very adaptable – you can alter most to suit your own personal tastes.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make homemade tzatziki sauce on a light colored background with text overlay.

  • 1/2 cucumber (grated and pressed, about 1/2 cup packed): English cucumbers are preferred because they have thin skin that doesn’t need to be peeled and not so many seeds. If you use a regular cucumber, you should peel it and remove the seeds before grating it.
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt (full fat is best)
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil: for a lower calorie version, you can omit the oil.
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill (minced): you can substitute 1 teaspoon dried dill.
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

The entire recipe and instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. You can print the recipe from the card, if needed.

Prep!

Grate the cucumber and place into a fine mesh sieve over a bowl. Press it to remove as much of the excess water as possible.

Mince the garlic and dill and squeeze the lemon juice.
