Top Chef Meals Meal Review
I received 11 meals, 1 side, and 2 desserts for less than $100 before shipping. Everything arrived well packaged and still completely frozen. There was no damage to any of my selections at all.
Top Chef Meals strongly recommends letting each meal defrost for 8-10 hours in the refrigerator before cooking it. Meals take around 90 seconds to cook in the microwave. You can also cook the meals in the oven for 15-20 minutes.
The following are the menu items I received, and a short review of each:
Breast of Chicken Francaise with White Wine Lemon Sauce, Sweet Potatoes, and Brussels Sprouts
Let’s address the fact that the description of this meal doesn’t quite match the photo. The sweet potatoes were missing, but substituted with Smashed Red Potatoes. I was never told there would be a substitution so I am not sure if this was a mistake, or they simply didn’t have the sweet potatoes. Both are favorites of mine, so I wasn’t upset.
I cooked this meal in the microwave for 90 seconds. Everything tasted really good, but the breading on the chicken was a little soggy. The White Wine Lemon Sauce was so good that I put in on everything! The vegetables are very lightly seasoned, so if you like more flavor, you may want to add your own after you try them.
Bison Burger with Sauteed Onions and California Blend
My fiance loves Bison! We made this meal in the microwave as well and it also took about 90 seconds to cook. He really enjoyed the burger and said that the onions were sweet and seasoned really well. The vegetables were okay, but he would prefer more seasoning as well.
Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese with Peas
I made this for myself on a really hectic afternoon and completely forgot to take a photo! The peas come in a separate compartment, not mixed into the Mac and Cheese portion.
This was a fairly large entree and I was not able to finish it all at once. I love gouda and the flavors of this meal were really good! The pasta was firm and not mushy at all. I enjoyed the peas and did not feel they needed any more seasoning.
I decided to make all of our remaining entrees in the oven instead of the microwave. Personally, I think that this helps to keep the integrity of some of the ingredients a bit better. If you have the time and the means, I would recommend this option. If the texture isn’t an issue, or you need your meals to be quick, they do still taste delicious out of the microwave!
Belgian Waffle with Hash Browns and Turkey Bacon
I enjoyed this meal for breakfast on a Saturday morning before rushing out the door for my son’s soccer game. It took about 15 minutes to heat in the oven. I loved the waffle and hash browns. The turkey bacon tasted good, but I like my bacon to be so well done that it crumbles. I may have been able to cook it a little longer to get that result, but just did not have the time.
Sausage and Egg Paleo Wrap with Pork Sausage
While I was enjoying my Belgian Waffle, my fiance attempted this Paleo Wrap. Unfortunately, this meal was not a winner. The wrap stuck to the plastic film while cooking. He said that the wrap itself tasted like plastic (he had no idea it had stuck to the plastic). The wrap tore and fell apart so that none of it was really around the sausage and egg. He pushed it to the side and tried the eggs, but felt they lacked flavor. He did love the three sausage links that came with this meal though.
Herb Grilled Chicken with Natural Au Jus, Herb Roasted Red Potatoes and Cauliflower Florets
I really loved this meal! The herb grilled chicken had great flavor and I used the Au Jus all over it. The potatoes were great and seasoned well. The cauliflower was a little bland, but still good. I also made a family-style side of stuffing and ate half of it with this meal. It had great flavors from the herbs and fruit in it. It was a little on the mushy side, but I enjoyed it!
Cavatappi Bolognese with Brussels Sprouts
My fiance thought this meal was great. It was a large portion, which is always a good thing with him! He told me that overall the meal had really good flavors and that the sauce was tangy, in a good way! He said the Brussels Sprouts tasted as he would have expected.
Sliced Roast Turkey Breast with Natural Grave, Smashed Red Skin Potatoes, and Butter with Corn
I think it’s pretty funny to call it “Butter with Corn,” when there isn’t all that much butter flavor. Corn without butter is delicious, so that was just fine with me. I also really liked that the corn appeared to be roasted.
The turkey was delicious and The Smashed Red Skin Potatoes were the same as I mentioned in the first entree. I had the second half of the stuffing with this meal. It was almost like Thanksgiving!
Classic Chicken Pot Pie with Carrots
This was another larger entree! I decided to remove the plastic film when cooking this one because it was pressed into the top of the puff pastry crust and I did not want what happened to the paleo wrap to happen here. I love puff pastry on Chicken Pot Pies!
The chicken inside is grilled, giving this Chicken Pot Pie some great flavors. This is another meal that I thoroughly enjoyed and would purchase again!
Sliced Blackened Flank Steak with California Blend Vegetables
In the photo of the meal on the Top Chef Meals website there was no mushroom gravy. There is another menu item that is flank steak with mushroom gravy so it’s possible this was an error. Because I don’t like mushrooms, my fiance ate this entree.
This meal was, by far, his favorite. He actually stopped eating and said “This steak is delicious!”
The steak was tender and the mushroom gravy was perfect. We will definitely order this meal again!
Chicken Cordon Bleu with Smashed Red Potatoes and Butter with Broccoli
This entire meal was delicious! Every component was very flavorful!
The breading on the chicken came out much crispier when cooked in the oven rather than the microwave. This time, there was a sauce on the side. It may have been the butter for the broccoli, but it tasted very sweet, like there was honey in it too. I put it on everything!
Raspberry Swirl and Chocolate Swirl Cheesecakes
My son and I really enjoyed both of these cheesecakes. There isn’t too much flavor from the swirl since it’s only on the top portion, but the cheesecake itself was delicious!
I would definitely purchase both of these menu items again!
Overall I think that Top Chef Meals offers some really delicious options for a great price. While I enjoy the process of prepping and cooking meals, I feel that anyone who doesn’t would love this service! It would also be a great gift for families with new babies, college students, or anyone who is just too busy to cook as often as they would like!
