I have found the answer for all the nights we get too busy to make dinner. The same solution also works for those who don’t know how to cook or put a meal together as well! Got a date you want to impress? I’ve got an answer for that too! Sun Basket!!
For years, I had only ever heard of meal delivery plans for dieters…or for celebrities. Then a few subscription meal delivery programs popped up and became quite popular among us common folk. But, Sun Basket is different! And, in my opinion, better! The delivery organic meals to your doorstep AND you can select from several menus, such as gluten free, paleo, and vegetarian, based on your dietary needs! The best part about Sun Basket, for me, is that you still actually prep the meal yourself (plenty of easy directions included) and you get to try foods you may never have had before! It’s awesome when you’re too busy to make dinner whether you are a seasoned pro or just beginning to cook!
I was able to try out Sun Basket a few weeks ago and I am NOT kidding when I tell you, we LOVED it! The food was easy to prepare, full of flavorful, impressive ingredients, and just really delicious! I am seriously craving more as I am writing this post!! I try to eat low carb, my boyfriend is gluten free, and we prefer organic food which isn’t always easy to find around here. I chose to try the three gluten free meals so that both my boyfriend and I could eat them and share our feedback.
The food arrived very well packaged with plenty of ice. Each meal comes in its own labeled brown paper bag. The meat was underneath for even more insulation to ensure it’s freshness. Each meal also came with a recipe card with simple, detailed directions on how to prepare each dish. It was so simple that I think it would be hard for even a beginner to mess up! All we needed to provide for any of the dishes was salt, pepper, and oil.
I took a ton of photos, forgive me, I was excited…but here are the three meals we got to try out:
Shrimp Tacos with Pickled Cabbage and Lime
These turned out far better than the last time I attempted to make my own Shrimp Tacos! There were some ingredients that needed chopping up, and the pepitas needed to be toasted, but all of that was quick and easy. The cabbage slaw was so good that I kept stealing little bites! I don’t really care for peppers, but had already decided that I was going to eat everything exactly as it was supposed to be prepared. I’m glad I did, because the ingredients worked really well together! This was a meal for 2 and we could have gotten 6 tacos from it. Because our meals were gluten free, I think the flour tortillas were replaced with corn tortillas. We don’t care for them much, so after the first taco, I turned this into a little appetizer dish instead. Not a single pepper strip went to waste!
My favorite parts of this meal were toasting the pepitas (they pop when they are ready!) and the diablo sauce! I have yet to look up what it is exactly, but it’s the red sauce the shrimp were cooked in and it was amazing! I would estimate this dish took under 30 minutes. That should help solve the complaint about being too busy to make dinner!
Salmon with Green Tahini Sauce and Roasted Root Vegetables
I really thought I might not like this one too much, and have to admit, this is the one I am craving the most right now! When I opened the bag and saw 4 baby carrots (yup, for 2 meals!), a huge bulb of fennel, and shallots (I really don’t like onions!) I wasn’t too excited. I also got to try green tahini and capers for the first time!
It turned out that those 4 carrots were enough, I love fennel, and the sauce that contained the shallots was my favorite part of the dish! On its own, the green tahini wasn’t amazing, but if you got the salmon, green tahini, and the shallot sauce in one bite, it all worked out perfectly! I couldn’t get enough, which might be the biggest problem with Sun Basket! You just want more, it’s so good! This dish took me about 20 minutes to make!
Coconut Rice with Okra and Paneer
When I first saw we were getting this meal, I had to google paneer! Turns out, it’s a cheese. I am a cheese loving freak, I should have known this! The okra scared me a bit (another new food for me to try!), but I love coconut rice so much that I figured if I didn’t like it, I’d still have rice and cheese. The other new ingredients to me with this meal were, tamarind paste, sambal oelek, and kaffir lime leaves! I just think it’s so cool to get to try all these foods I would never be able to find around here!
This was another quick and easy dish to prepare! Daryl and I are polar opposites when it comes to cheese. I can’t get enough and he pretty much hates the stuff (except on pizza). I thought he would avoid the paneer, but it isn’t as strong as most other cheeses and took on the flavor of the dish, somewhat similar to tofu! I was hoping he wouldn’t like it so I could have all his too!! He had never had okra before either, and we both ended up loving it! This dish was so unique and different that you felt like you were eating something exotic, which was fun!
Obviously, I would highly recommend Sun Basket. They allow you to skip or cancel anytime so you don’t have to commit to weekly deliveries. I can see myself using this service when I know I’ll have a week I’ll be too busy to make dinner a few nights. I’m also thinking it might be good the week after vacation so we don’t have to worry about running to the grocery store right away (I always hate that). I may end up getting it even more often though, just because the food is so unique, organic, and delicious! This really is a great alternative to fast food on those nights you may get too busy to make dinner. You get to try so many unique foods and learn how to prepare things you may have never made before! And, if your gluten free, or follow another special diet, they have something for you too!
For what you get, I think the value for Sun Basket is amazing! It’s $11.49/meal and you can get 2 or 4 of each of the 3 meals you choose (totaling 6 or 12 meals) and shipping is very reasonable (they currently deliver to 38 states so make sure to check your zip code before you order!)! Right now you can get $30 off your first week – no code necessary, just visit the site through one of the links in this post. I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

I’ve tried Hello Fresh and Green Chef and have been wanting to try Sunbasket but there haven’t been three meals yet I know my husband and I would both eat, hopefully soon! I love how easy they make cooking and you really can’t screw up the meals! Glad you enjoyed your experience!

I wasn’t sure about the paneer recipe and it was delicious! I check the menu all the time. I’m pretty sure you can swap out the meals if you need to before you send your order so you don’t HAVE to get whats under each plan.

I LOVE the idea of this! It would make figuring out what to make for dinner SO much easier! My fiancé and I always get stuck on what to make and then we don’t make anything.

Thank you for doing an unboxing..I am always afraid that the veggies will melt from the heat and arrive looking gross, but I can tell from your pic that they arrived fresher than the ones in my grocery!

I was worried too but Sun Basket had everything packaged so well! Definitely better food than I can find in stores around here!

Yes! I can’t see using it every week because I like to cook and experiment, but I’d definitely use it at certain times. I’m seriously craving that salmon still!

I would love to try this. I heard of other ones but not sun basket. And it is organic

YES! I love that it’s organic, especially because we have very limited choices around me for grocery shopping. The fish was wild caught too, and the ingredients are so unique and fun to get to try!

Oh my gosh…then you KNOW my pain…no cheesy dinners 🙁 Thanks for your kind words…I’m an amateur when it comes to photography, so it’s really nice to hear a few compliments on it lately! I must be progressing! But the food was so good and pretty, it definitely made things easier lol.

I have always been so curious about these food subscription boxes. They seem too good to be true. I mean, a healthy balanced meal in a box? But your photos do it justice. I think, at some point I will have to give one a try just to see how nice it is to not have to plan and make dinner.

I was so surprised. Comments I read online said the food was good, but I had NO idea how unique it was! The chef who puts it together worked in a James Beard award winning restaurant. I would highly recommend this sub box for meals!
