It is no secret that I am a fan of subscription boxes of all kinds, but I have to say that meal delivery subscriptions are my favorite. Blue Apron is one of the most popular so I am really excited to share a Blue Apron review with you!
Getting Started
With Blue Apron you can choose either a 2 or 4 person I chose a 2 person plan consisting of 3 recipes (2 servings each). If you choose a 4 person plan you can select to receive either 2 or 4 recipes (4 servings each).
Next, you’ll select your recipes. Just keep in mind that some combinations of recipes can’t be ordered together. I found this a little frustrating, but in the end, I was happy with my final choices.
The meals I chose for the week I am reviewing are: Vietnamese Meatballs, Shrimp and Shitake Dumplings, and Seared Chicken.
Shipping and Packaging
My Blue Apron order arrived as scheduled. The ice was still frozen solid and all the contents were nice and cold.
With Blue Apron all the larger produce items are loose in the box, with smaller items in individual small brown bags labeled for each recipe. Under the produce was a piece of cardboard and the meat was underneath that on top of the ice. Large recipe cards with thorough directions and photos are also included.
The Meals
I ended up separating all the items per recipe to store in my refrigerator until I was ready to use them. I made one meal a day for lunch. While the meals are plenty enough for me (and most people I know!), my fiance eats way more than normal so I would save the second meal for him to have with dinner.
Vietnamese Meatballs with Sweet Potato Noodles and Daikon Radish
I stepped outside my comfort zone with a couple of these meals. This was one of them. I like to try new foods and with this recipe, I was able to try fresh lemongrass, daikon radish, and sweet potato noodles for the first time! Even though I don’t care for scallions and celery, I planned to make the recipe exactly as written.
Overall the recipe was easy to make. I followed the directions step-by-step and although I was a little nervous I wouldn’t like the finished dish, I ended up really loving this entire meal, scallions and all!
Shrimp and Shiitake Dumpling with Sauteed Bok Choy and Soy Dipping Sauce
I’ll eat just about anything you can stuff into dumpling – I love them! But, if I stepped out of my comfort zone with the last dish, then I jumped out with this one. Mushrooms? Yuck. However, I already decided I was going to make these recipes as written and give them a chance.
Guess what? I loved this dish too! Seriously! I’m not really sure that I could taste the shiitakes but everything combined was amazing. Some of the other ingredients were also new to me, including the baby bok choy (yum!) and furikake (a combination of sesame seeds and seaweed).
Seared Chicken with Roasted Honeynut Squash and Garlic Rice
I made this dish last because I thought it was going to be kind of boring. Had I read the full ingredient list and recipe, I would have thought differently. This might just be my favorite of the three!
The ingredients include a Mexican Spice Blend to put on the chicken, making it spicy! There’s also a sauce with cilantro, lime, honey, and pepitas to put onto the chicken that is so good! The only ingredient that I had never tried before was the honeynut squash. I’ll definitely be checking my local grocery store for them now – so good!
The Cost
Depending on the plan you choose, the cost for each serving ranges from $8.74 to $9.99. I found this to be right around average for meal subscription services. With Blue Apron, shipping is free. You can skip anytime and if you decide it’s not for you, canceling is just as easy!
I hope this Blue Apron review helps you decide if it’s something you want to try! I would also consider giving it as a gift! It’s great for anyone! From foodies to beginners!
