Last year was my first year as a stay-at-home mom. Daycare always took care of the after school snacks, homework, and had a schedule for all kinds of indoor and outdoor activities! Honestly, I was not prepared for how hectic after school can be and I think we both got overwhelmed. This year, I’m getting a head start on the issues we had last year and, not surprisingly, I’m starting with the food!
One of the hardest decisions for my 8-year-old to make is what to have for his after school snack each day! Seriously, it can take him up to a half hour to decide. Then, he’s getting a late start on his homework which leads to complaining about how he doesn’t have enough time to play. It would go on and on and neither one of us ended up very happy. This summer, we made a Mystery After School Snack Pack to simplify the process, making snack time quicker and easier!
All you need is an empty Kleenex Tissue box, snack bags, snacks, Viva paper towels, and items to decorate your box such as construction paper, stickers, markers, and crayons!
I let Jaxon choose a Kleenex box from the stash we had on hand because he wanted to put all the Finding Dory ones in his bedroom and bathroom. He went with a green box and wanted a sign that said “Mystery After School Snack Packs” on it. He also wanted to tape candies all over it even though he knows candy is not going to be making frequent appearances in his box!. I always let him have creative freedom with these types of things and find he’s less resistant to my grand ideas this way!
Each Sunday night, I will be making up 5 snack packs for the week. We agreed that he could not switch out the snacks. Each snack bag will contain an after school snack or a note to grab a refrigerated snack, and a Viva paper towel. Occasionally I will add a small piece of candy or a little surprise (gift cards, movie tickets etc. based on how well he’s doing in school) to one of the bags as a special surprise. I’m looking forward to this school year being a little more organized and easy going than the last one!
