Sweet potatoes are a go-to vegetable in our home. We eat them at least once a week all year long.
This recipe for Mashed Sweet Potatoes is a sweeter way to enjoy them. They are made with maple syrup and cinnamon to give them a warm flavor profile that’s perfect for fall dishes, but also works well at holiday or Sunday family dinners.
Pair them with main dishes like Easy Garlic Chicken or Maple Apple Pork Chops.
Why This Recipe Works
This is a straightforward, easy recipe to make. It’s as simple as boiling the potatoes and mashing them with a few, simple ingredients.
These potatoes are sweet and buttery with a bit of warm spice from the added cinnamon.
The recipe is adaptable. You can control how much maple syrup or cinnamon you add, or omit them completely. The amount of butter and cream and texture of the mashed potatoes is also controllable.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Ingredients
- 3 pounds sweet potatoes (peeled and diced into 1-inch pieces)
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup maple syrup: you can add more of less maple syrup to suite your own tastes or omit it altogether for a more savory option.
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon: you can add more or less or omit it, if preferred.
- salt
- pepper
The entire recipe and instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. You can print the recipe from the card, if needed.
Prep!
Peeling and dicing the sweet potatoes is the only significant prep work for this recipe.
Create!
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Add the sweet potatoes and cook until easily pierced with a fork, about 8-10 minutes.
Drain the potatoes and transfer to a large mixing bowl.
Return the pot to the stove over low heat and add the butter and cream to melt the butter and warm the mixture. Warming the mixture helps it to blend into the potatoes better while also keeping them warm. This results in creamier mashed potatoes.
Add the maple syrup and ground cinnamon to the potatoes and use a potato masher to start to break them up.
Gradually add the warm butter and cream while continuing to mash until the desired consistency is reached. You may or may not use all of the mixture. You can mash the potatoes until completely smooth or leave them a little chunky for a more homestyle consistency.
Taste and season with salt and pepper, as desired.
Present!
Serve with additional butter and syrup, if desired.
Tips and Techniques
- For a more savory mashed sweet potatoes recipe, omit the maple syrup. The cinnamon is also optional.
- Don’t skip melting the butter and cream. It helps keep the potatoes warm while also incorporating more evenly into them for a creamier result.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Consume within 3-5 days.

My invitees DEMAND sweet potatoes or yams at both Thanksgiving and Christmas. I tried your recipe this Thanksgiving. Kudos! They loved it. Satisfied those with “sweet teeth”, and satisfied those who prefer savory.
