Just a couple simple changes is all it takes to turn a classic coleslaw recipe into an equally as delicious Keto Coleslaw. Try it on sugar-free pulled pork or as a side dish – especially during barbecue season. With only 1 net carb per serving, it’s a perfect choice for those following a low carb or keto diet.

Coleslaw is one of those foods that I never wanted to eat as a kid, and now I love it. I think I used to get it confused with sauerkraut, which I still don’t eat.

It’s such a classic summer recipe to have on top of pulled pork or as a barbecue side dish.

You might assume that coleslaw is already keto friendly, but it’s not. Most coleslaw has a good amount of added sugar and contains ingredients that some stricter keto dieters may want to avoid, like carrots and soy.

Luckily, it is actually a really easy recipe to make keto-friendly without sacrificing the traditional flavor you know and love.

Why This Recipe Works

Keto Coleslaw is really not that different at all from traditional coleslaw. In fact, the flavor is almost identical to classic coleslaw.

The carrots are eliminated and sugar is replaced by a monk fruit and erythritol blend (or whatever zero carb sweetener that you prefer). Stricter keto dieters may want to be sure to use a keto-friendly mayonnaise to avoid soy, as well.

It’s a very quick and easy recipe. You can make it from scratch rather than buying bagged shredded cabbage, although buying pre-shredded cabbage will save you a few minutes.

This recipe is easily adjustable to suit your own tastes.

There is only 1 net carb per serving and it’s naturally gluten free.

How To Make Keto Coleslaw

Ingredients

Ingredients for keto coleslaw on a white background

  • 4-5 cups cabbage, thinly sliced (you can use green, purple or a combination)
  • 1/2 cup keto mayonnaise (I like Sir Kensington’s)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon monk fruit/erythritol blend, or equivalent (I use Lakanto classic)
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed (* not celery salt)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper (or to taste)

The entire recipe and instructions can also be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. You can also print the recipe from the card, if needed.

Prep!

Thinly slice or dice the cabbage.

Chef’s Tip: you can use pre-shredded bagged cabbage (if your store carries one without carrots) to save a few minutes time.

Create!

Cabbage in a glass bowl on a white background

Add the shredded cabbage to a medium bowl. Set aside.

Keto coleslaw dressing in a glass bowl over a white background

Mix the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, monk fruit, celery seed, salt, and pepper in a small bowl until well combined.

Taste and adjust the seasoning to your liking.

Chef’s Tip: I always mix the coleslaw dressing in a separate bowl so that it’s easier to blend well and adjust, as needed.

Pour the coleslaw dressing into the bowl with the shredded cabbage and toss to coat the cabbage.

Serve immediately.

Tips and Techniques

  • You can use pre-shredded bagged cabbage (without carrots) to save a few minutes.
  • Mix the coleslaw dressing in a separate bowl so that you can easily blend it and taste it to adjust the seasoning before mixing it into the cabbage.
  • Store extra coleslaw in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Use within 3-5 days and discard if its been left out at room temperature for longer than 2 hours.

FAQ’s

Cabbage is an excellent choice of vegetable when following a keto diet. There are approximately 2 net carbs per cup of shredded cabbage.

Is Coleslaw Okay On A Keto Diet?

Coleslaw is a great option for those following a keto diet, however it is best prepared homemade. Most store-bought and restaurant coleslaw recipes have sugar in them, as well as ingredients some stricter keto dieters may want to avoid.

The serving size of 1 gram can’t be correct. That’s about a tablespoon. What is the serving size?? Thank you. Made some today, is great, but need to make sure my macros are accurate.

Hi Lynne! You are correct. 1 grams is not the serving size. I think there was an update to the recipe card I use and it changed everything to 1 gram awhile back. For most recipes, the nutritional facts are calculated using the national nutritional data base. It takes ingredients and calculates them based on how many servings there are. In this case, there are 8 servings so you’d take the entire recipe and divide it evenly into 8 portions. Of course this is going to vary if you use a different mayo or sweetener, more or less cabbage etc. I hope t his helps some.
