I just love Blue Apron. The food is always fresh and in great condition when it arrives, and the meals are simply delicious! For this review, I chose a vegetarian meal, chicken enchiladas, and spicy burgers.
What is Blue Apron?
Blue Apron is a meal kit delivery subscription. Basically what they means is that every week, you choose 3 meals you like and Blue Apron will send you the recipe cards and all of the ingredients needed to make each one. You can skip anytime you want and canceling is easy with this particular company.
Who is Blue Apron For?
Blue Apron is for just about everyone! I love it for those busy weeknights when I don’t have a lot of time to cook or when I am running behind on getting groceries. It’s also great for beginner cooks, college students, families…you name it!
Blue Apron doesn’t label which different diets their meals fit into for the most part. They do note vegetarian recipes and now have a plan with WW Lifestyle (“healthy” meals). Otherwise you would have to check the recipe’s nutritional information to determine if it’s right for you.
How Much Does Blue Apron Cost?
Meal prices range from $7.49 to $9.99 a serving depending on which plan (2-person or family) and how many servings (2-4) of each recipe you order.
At the time of this post, Blue Apron is offering $60 off of your first two boxes (that’s $30 off of each box). To get this offer and check out the upcoming menu, CLICK HERE!

Blue Apron Shipping
Shipping is included in the price of the meals when you order 3 recipes per week or any of the 4-person plans. For the smaller 2 recipe/2 person plans, shipping is $7.99. My box arrived on time. It was well insulted with a large ice pack. The proteins were at the bottom of the box on top of the ice pack to ensure they stayed very cold during shipping.
Blue Apron does not package the ingredients for each meal together. However, they do package what they refer to as “knick-knacks” together, which are the smaller items for each recipe, in a plastic bag. Recipe cards are included.
Once I got my box, I separated everything out by recipe and put it all in separate bags in the fridge for easier access when I am ready to cook.
Za’atar Cauliflower Steaks with Chickpeas, Carrots, and Couscous
I always love Blue Apron’s vegetarian meals. The combination of flavors is always really creative and delicious. These cauliflower steaks were no different.
The za’atar seasoning is simple, yet so flavorful, on the cauliflower. The couscous and chickpeas were easy to make while the cauliflower steaks were baking and the perfect compliment of flavors.
I usually find that the vegetarian servings are a bit too much for me and often get 3 servings rather than 2 from these recipes.
Cheesy Chicken Enchiladas with Guadjillo Pepper Sauce
I have never had chicken enchiladas like this before. That’s another reason I love Blue Apron so much. What seems like a basic dinner recipe is so much more flavorful with the extra little touches, such as the Guadjilla Pepper Sauce.
Again, this recipe was super easy to make and the perfect size serving for me.
This was my favorite of the three recipes this week and I was a little sad I decided to share them with my fiancé – haha! He loved them just as much as I did though and we will likely attempt to make our own soon!
Jalapeño Burgers with Goat Cheese and Smoky Roasted Carrots
I chose this Jalapeño Burger recipe for my fiancé. He’s a typical burger-loving guy and will never say “no” to spice.
The burgers themselves were pretty plan – just beef, salt, and pepper, but the toppings were anything but. Quick pickled jalapenos, tangy goat cheese and creamy mustard sauce gave these burgers incredible flavor.
The smoky carrots were a nice change from potatoes. Everything was simple to make and super delicious!
Pros and Cons of Blue Apron
Blue Apron does some things really well, and other things maybe not quite as well. These are some of the pro’s and con’s of this particular meal kit subscription box:
Pro’s
- The food arrives fresh and undamaged (in my personal experiences) and there is a Freshness Guarantee that if something is not as it should be, Blue Apron will make it right.
- The recipes are easy to make and have a ton of flavor
- The serving sizes are good, and the vegetarian serving sizes are very generous!
- Shipping is included with some plans
- A history of fun collaborations with brands like Bob’s Burgers and Whole 30.
Con’s
- Blue Apron does not really cater to specific diets other than vegetarian and the “healthy” meals you can get through their WW Lifestyle plan. If you have certain dietary limitations, you would have to really look at the recipe ingredients and nutritional information to determine if it’s right for you.
- There is non-recyclable plastic bag packaging. Even though Blue Apron does not divide the recipes into separate bags, almost every different item is still in it’s own plastic bag with the exception of the smaller items which get packaged in one plastic bag. We do reuse and recycle everything that we can, but unfortunately the only place near us that collected plastic bags has stopped.
How to Order A Blue Apron Box For Yourself
Overall, I do highly recommend Blue Apron! I haven’t had any issues with this subscription at all and the food is always delicious.
