Blue Apron is one of my favorite meal kit subscription services. I didn’t mean to order this box (I forgot to skip – totally my fault), but was very happy with the meals that I received. My family and I enjoyed them all.
This review includes all of the details of Blue Apron’s service, as well as of the 3 meals that I received.
What is Blue Apron?
Blue Apron is a meal kit delivery subscription. Basically what they means is that every week, you choose 3 meals you like and Blue Apron will send you the recipe cards and all of the ingredients needed to make each one. You can skip anytime you want and canceling is easy with this particular company.
Who is Blue Apron For?
Blue Apron is for just about everyone! I love it for those busy weeknights when I don’t have a lot of time to cook or when I am running behind on getting groceries. It’s also great for beginner cooks, college students, families…you name it!
Blue Apron doesn’t label which different diets their meals fit into for the most part. They do note vegetarian recipes and now have a plan with WW Lifestyle (“healthy” meals). Otherwise you would have to check the recipe’s nutritional information to determine if it’s right for you.
How Much Does Blue Apron Cost?
Meal prices range from $7.49 to $9.99 a serving depending on which plan (2-person or family) and how many servings (2-4) of each recipe you order.
At the time of this post, Blue Apron is offering $60 off of your first three boxes (that’s $20 off of each box). To get this offer and check out the upcoming menu, CLICK HERE!

Blue Apron Shipping
Shipping is included in the price of the meals when you order 3 recipes per week or any of the 4-person plans. For the smaller 2 recipe/2 person plans, shipping is $7.99. My box arrived on time. It was well insulted with a large ice pack. The proteins were at the bottom of the box on top of the ice pack to ensure they stayed very cold during shipping.
Blue Apron does not package the ingredients for each meal together. However, they do package what they refer to as “knick-knacks” together, which are the smaller items for each recipe, in a plastic bag. Recipe cards are included.
Once I got my box, I separated everything out by recipe and put it all in separate bags in the fridge for easier access when I am ready to cook.
Seared Pork Chops & BBQ Sauce with Mashed Sweet Potatoes
This pork chops recipe was pretty basic, but in usual Blue Apron fashion, they flavored it up a bit with the barbecue sauce and chopped jalapenos on the zucchini. Blue Apron does a really good job at showing that a little something extra can make a big difference.
In the recipe card, it shows the barbecue sauce on top of the pork and the sweet potato mash. Neither myself or my fiancé added the sauce to the potatoes. The butter was enough.
While this isn’t the most exciting recipe, it was delicious and filling.
Mediterranean Chicken & Orzo with Snap Peas, Feta, & Olives
The next recipe that I made was this chicken and pasta dish. My son chose this one on a night that my fiancé was working late fixing his house up for sale. Blue Apron has been a really great resource the last couple of weeks when he’s gone.
Again, this was a super easy recipe to make and the little things, like adding a splash of red wine to the orzo, really added a ton of flavor. My favorite part was the olive tapenade on top of the chicken. My son doesn’t care for olives so I ate his half as well.
We both really loved the feta and peas in the pasta. Overall this was a really tasty meal!
Tomatillo Pork Tacos with Cotija and Cabbage Slaw
This last recipe for pork tacos, I enjoyed myself for lunch 2 days in a row.
The Tomatillo Poblano Sauce was sweet and citrusy. It added a very unique flavor to the pork that was just delicious when combined with the smoky seasoning and cotija cheese.
I don’t care for raw radishes much, so I omitted those, but otherwise loved the entire recipe. The slaw was so easy to make and will likely be a regular in my home now!
Pros and Cons of Blue Apron
Blue Apron does some things really well, and other things maybe not quite as well. These are some of the pro’s and con’s of this particular meal kit subscription box:
Pro’s
- The food arrives fresh and undamaged (in my personal experiences) and there is a Freshness Guarantee that if something is not as it should be, Blue Apron will make it right.
- The recipes are easy to make and have a ton of flavor
- The serving sizes are good, and the vegetarian serving sizes are very generous!
- Shipping is included with some plans
- A history of fun collaborations with brands like Bob’s Burgers and Whole 30.
Con’s
- Blue Apron does not really cater to specific diets other than vegetarian and the “healthy” meals you can get through their WW Lifestyle plan. If you have certain dietary limitations, you would have to really look at the recipe ingredients and nutritional information to determine if it’s right for you.
- There is non-recyclable plastic bag packaging. Even though Blue Apron does not divide the recipes into separate bags, almost every different item is still in it’s own plastic bag with the exception of the smaller items which get packaged in one plastic bag. We do reuse and recycle everything that we can, but unfortunately the only place near us that collected plastic bags has stopped.
How to Order A Blue Apron Box For Yourself
Overall, I do highly recommend Blue Apron! I haven’t had any issues with this subscription at all and the food and recipes are always delicious.
