Grilled Apples with Bourbon and Brown Sugar bring the flavors of apple pie to your summer grill! This easy-to-make recipe is the perfect dessert to enjoy during barbecues and cookouts. Serve it à la mode with a scoop of cold, creamy vanilla ice cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon and granola.
When planning a summer recipe with McCormick seasonings and marinades, I knew that I wanted to make something a little bit different and unexpected, but still very flavorful and enticing.
Grilled fruit is pretty popular, however, I had never come across a recipe for grilled apples before. I did a little research and found that it can be done. Then, it was simply a matter of figuring out the right flavors to use and how to best serve them.
Bourbon Apple Pie is pretty common and brown sugar is almost always used in apple pie, as well. It made perfect sense to marinate the apples in McCormick Grill Mates Brown Sugar Bourbon Marinade before grilling them up and serving them à la mode with cinnamon, granola, and a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Why This Recipe Works
- The McCormick Grill Mates Brown Sugar Bourbon Marinade gives the apples the flavor of a savory bourbon apple pie.
- The recipe is quick and easy. Marinating the apples only takes 15 minutes. Then, they only take 6-7 minutes to grill. It’s kind of like a deconstructed summer apple pie with a few “short cuts” to make things even simpler.
- Grilled Apples are the perfect dessert to end a summer cookout or barbecue, especially while entertaining. The grill is already out and ready to go!
How to Make Grilled Apples
What You Need To Make This Recipe
To make this recipe, you will need:
- 1 packet McCormick Grill Mates Brown Sugar Bourbon Marinade (+ 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup oil, and 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar)
- 4 apples (be sure to use firm apples)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup vanilla ice cream
- 1/4 cup granola (I used a maple flavored granola)
Tip: the measurements for the cinnamon, ice cream, and granola are just approximates. You can always add more or less to suite your own personal tastes.
The entire recipe and instructions can also be found in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. You can also print the recipe from the card, if needed.
Prep!
Prepare the Brown Sugar Bourbon Marinade by simply whisking together the water, oil, and apple cider vinegar with the contents of the package. It’s so quick and easy!
Tip: you can add an additional tablespoon of brown sugar to the marinade to make it a bit sweeter, if preferred. I have found that the cinnamon and vanilla ice cream balanced out the flavors pretty well, but these apples are not super sweet right off the grill.
Pour the marinade into a large pan or zip top bag.
Create!
If you have an apple corer, remove the cores from the four apples. If you don’t have an apple corer, you can use a melon baller to remove the seeds and core after slicing the apples.
Cut the apples horizontally into thick 1/2-inch slices. Discard the top and bottom. You should get 2-3 apple slices per apple depending on the size of your apples.
Place the apple slices in the marinade and turn or toss to gently coat. Cover and allow to marinate for 15 minutes, but no longer than 30 minutes.
Preheat your grill to 350°F or medium high.
Using tongs, place the apple slices onto the hot grill. Allow to grill for 2-3 minutes or until light brown grill marks appear on the bottoms.
Turn and grill an additional 2-3 minutes or until the apples are just fork-tender.
Remove to a plate and allow to cool a few minutes.
Present!
Top the 2-3 slices of the warm apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and granola. Serve immediately.
You can also serve these apples right off the grill as a sweet and savory side dish to enjoy with your grilled meats and seafood, if preferred.
Tips and Techniques
- You can adjust the measurements for the cinnamon, ice cream, and granola to suite your own personal tastes.
- Add an additional tablespoon of brown sugar to the marinade to make it a bit sweeter, if preferred.
- These grilled apples can also be served right off the grill as a sweet and savory side dish to enjoy with your grilled meats and seafood.
- Store leftover grilled apple slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 4-5 days.

I’ve never hd grilled apples before, they sound yummy. I refuse to bake in the summer so I love this idea for getting something with an apple pie flavor without baking.
