I feel like peach cobbler is to summer, what apple pie is to fall and being that we are at the height of peach season, it’s the perfect time to make this easy, delicious dessert.

Brown sugar and cinnamon adds a touch of warmness the the fresh, juicy peaches in this traditional summer recipe.

Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler is made by melting butter in a casserole dish, pouring in a batter and sprinkling sliced peaches over the top. The magic happens as the cobbler bakes.

The peaches will sink to the bottom, while the butter and batter develop into a perfectly crispy crust on top (there is no bottom crust in a cobbler). It’s a fun recipe to make with kids. They are always so amazed at how this recipe looks when it comes out of the oven. It’s not the prettiest of desserts, but it sure is tasty!

If you prefer a drop biscuit topping, you can prepare the peaches as described here, then follow the drop biscuit dough and baking instructions in my Cherry Cobbler recipe.

Why This Recipe Works

This is a classic summer recipe that’s easy and fun to make. You can easily double or triple the recipe to serve a crowd. It’s perfect for summer barbecues and cookouts.

Cinnamon and brown sugar add warmness and a hint of spice to this cobbler recipe.

Served with a scoop of ice cream, this is a perfect treat to cool down after a long, hot summer day.

How to Make Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler

Ingredients

  • Peaches: fresh summer peaches taste best in this recipe, however canned peaches or frozen, thawed peaches can be used if preferred.
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Whole Milk
  • Pantry Staples: all purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, brown sugar and cinnamon. We highly recommend using high-quality baking products like King Arthur brand for the best results.

Prep!

Preheat oven to 350°F.

If you are using fresh peaches you will need to peel and slice them.

Note: peeling the peaches is totally optional. If the fuzziness and texture of the peach skin doesn’t bother you, then by all means, skip the hassle of peeling them.

Create!

Melted butter in a white, square baking dish

Place the butter in the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch (or equivalent) baking dish and put it in the oven for 2-3 minutes until the butter has melted completely.

Meanwhile, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk in the milk.

Pour the batter over the melted butter, but do not stir it.

Sliced peaches, brown sugar and cinnamon in a pot over a white background

In a medium saucepan, combine the peaches, brown sugar, and cinnamon over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes or until the mixture is hot and bubbly.

Bake for approximately 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crisp around the edges.

Present!

You can serve peach cobbler warm or chilled. It’s the perfect dish to serve a la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or even just a little whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Tips and Techniques

  • Store leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator. Use within 4-5 days.
