An Apple Crostata is also commonly known as an apple galette or a rustic apple tart.
It’s made of spiced apples on a single flaky pie crust where the edges are folded over just about an inch or so to keep all the juices in.
This version also adds a crisp topping making it a delicious cross between an apple pie and an Apple Crisp. It really is the best of both worlds.
Why This Recipe Works
This is a really quick and easy recipe to make. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it actually looks best when it’s not, making it a really great recipe to make with kids.
It’s the perfect recipe for those who can’t decide between apple pie and apple crisp. You get a little of both in each and every bite.
Apple Crostata is most delicious when served warm with scoops of creamy vanilla ice cream on top.
How to Make an Apple Crostata
Prep!
You can use a single homemade pie crust or a store bought one.
If you are making a homemade crust, you will need to do that first. If you are using a store bought crust, let it sit out at room temperature for about 20 minutes before you begin.
Tip: while a homemade pie crust will give you more of that rustic look, using a store bought crust does make the recipe quicker and easier.
Preheat your oven to 425°F.
Create!
Slice the apples thin and add to a medium size bowl with the sugar, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves.
Tip: be sure to slice the apples thin to help make layering them on top of each other much easier.
Roll the pie crust out into a circle shape – it doesn’t have to be perfect.
Layer the apples around the center, leaving a 1 1/2-inch border.
Combine the oats, brown sugar, flour, and butter in the same bowl that was used for the apples.
Using a fork, mash it all together until crumbs form.
Top the apples with the crisp topping.
Then, fold the edges of the pie crust over the apples about an inch, pinching the folds together as you go.
Brush with an egg wash, if desired.
Tip: an egg wash will give the pie a more golden, shine. The photos in this post do not use an egg wash due to an apple pie loving little boy having an egg allergy.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are bubbling hot.
Present!
Serve the Apple Crisp Crostata warm. Top with scoops of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
